Opening Gambit

This is your opportunity to keep in touch with old cycle interests as they vary and jump about with glee in all those parts of the world that appreciate good things.

We must wait and see how things develop in this space - and the ball is in your court. Remember that courtesy is old but not old fashioned and will be insited upon here.

Areas for discussion can ramble and wamble but a few of my favourites are Paris, Rensch, Raleigh, Centaur, Maclean, Frederick, Major Nichols -they will do for a start. As for details, how about talking about gears, lugs, mudguards, saddles, old cyclists.

  2. Well done Alvin - a great initiative! I hope I have cracked the enigma code to become a follower of the blog.

    I have just spend a happy hour in my cold garage trying to make a clamp for the tensioning cable on the rear triangle of my new Kemper Pedersen. I used a piece of stainless steel that I rescued from the Earls Court Motor Show stand of Vauxhall Motors when it was dismantled after the 1960 Motor Show. I claim not to be hoarder but my little box marked 'Precious Scrap' is not really a 'hoard' and often justifies its existence!

    I am trying to commission a nickel plating kit that has been 'hoarded' by Pete Cox since 1991. It was originally marketed by Dynic Sales of Leamington Spa but unfortunately the user instructions have not been 'hoarded' with it. Anyone got any experience of DIY electro plating? If I can get this thing working we may have useful facilty for the Hereford Group.

  3. An excellent idea Alvin, and will, I am sure, be used a lot. Can I start by asking for advice on chainsets. I have a 1956 Claud Butler 'Aspirant' frame which I want to build up this year. I have a p/copy (from the V-CC archives at the cycling museum in Llandod) of the CB catalogue for the year, but there are no details of the make of chainwheel, so if there are any ideas I'd be grateful to hear them. I plan to fit an outer and inner ring (given the hills round here) in either a 10 speed or 8 speed, both of which were an option at the time. Most of the other bits are listed by make.   5. This is great by making an open comment about nickel plating Peter has responded with an offer of a copy of the instructions for a Dynic kit.

    I am not sure of the protocols for 'blogs' are they much the same as a 'forum'? - or should they be more like an opinionated diary. I guess Alvin, as the 'blog-master' will guide us.

  6. First welcome to you all - I have been trying to get back in once I set this blog up. There is something apocryphal about that but we had better let it pass!

    Excellent news for Malcolm- and I know Peter Cox and Malcolm will be happy for this set to see general use once it is set up.

    For your CB chainset, John, we need to know a little more -my 1939 catalogue shows that CB fitted quite a range of proprietary chainsets depending on the cost of their bikes, these were mostly steel but I guess by 1956 we are talking about alloy sets with square drive axles -could you post a digital picture on the blog? I probably have a cheapy double like a Sugino you could have if you need it -just let us know. I will also ask Geoff Cook who is a CB fan to comment further.

    In view of the intentions of this blog I have sent out invitations to some of you who might like to be considered as authors along with me, I hope I am not being presumptuous. I have also asked Peter Underwood to send out the original link to readers of Lightweight News so at the end of the month we may get some wider involvement.

John has sent a photo from the 1956 catalogue, which I will try to attach but which shows a CB (unbranded) version of a C34, so clearly someone else has added a double chainwheel to his bike since it was made -or else it is aslightly later Aspirant model. I think it might be possible to mount a double chainwheel on a C34 spider -can someone jog my memory of what is needed -cana Chater lea Tandem fitting be used for this purpose?

  10. John has told me today that the crank has a Raleigh mark on it, and I have advised him to beware that this spider will probably not match anything else on the jumble table- he is off to Worcester on Saturday to see if he can find anything! Here is John's bike-as per catalogue
